Updating Your Pet’s Vaccines Before Boarding

Updating Vaccinations at Our Veterinarian in Southington before Boarding at a Nearby Kennel

Sometimes boarding your pet is a necessity. Whether for a family emergency, a vacation, or even while you transition from one home to another – there are times when boarding is the best way to keep your pet safe while you get the things done that you need to get done. Many pet owners do not realize that updated vaccinations are a requirement for boarding, both for your pet’s safety and the safety of the other pets at the boarding facility. As your veterinarian in Plantsville, we are your resource for information about vaccination updates!

Boarding Facilities Require Vaccinations

The vast majority of boarding facilities are going to require that your dog or cat have up-to-date vaccinations, including:

Required Vaccinations for Dogs

  • Rabies
  • Distemper (DHPP)
  • Bordetella Vaccine

Required Vaccinations for Cats

  • Rabies
  • Distemper (FVRCP)

Boarding facilities will also want your pet to be currently on a flea and tick preventative and may ask for fecal test results showing negative within the last six months. Many kennels want additional protections.

CIRD Complex refers to contagious diseases caused by several organisms that produce respiratory symptoms that can be serious or even deadly. Bordetella Vaccination is familiar to most as a primary cause of “kennel cough.” Almost all boarding facilities require vaccination against this bacterium. Influenza vaccination might be unfamiliar as a cause of CIRD but is just as contagious and a lot more serious. Although there have been canine flu infections with several strains of the virus, the H3N2 strain is currently spreading through the country. Many kennels already require protection against influenza, and we expect the rest to follow suit. To protect your dog, two doses are required over a three week period, so plan ahead.

Knowing What Vaccinations Are Right For Your Pet

Our approach to vaccinations and veterinary care is based on smart veterinary medicine and common sense. We look carefully at the lifestyle of both you and your pet, as well as any potential risks that your pet faces, and recommend vaccinations based on experience. We encourage you to come by and discuss your pet’s vaccinations if you think there is any chance your pet will stay at a boarding facility. We can help you understand what vaccinations you need, and administer them as necessary.
