By now, most of our clients are aware that some foods which we tolerate well, like chocolate, raisins, and grapes, are harmful to our pets. We need to remind you about another substance that we put in our mouths but should be kept away from dogs and cats. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener commonly found in sugarless gums and mints. Unfortunately, this chemical can be extremely toxic, even deadly, for dogs and cats. Please follow this link to this article from the AVMA before you try to cure your dog’s bad breath by tossing her an artificially sweetened breath mint!

One of the most common problems in our pet population is allergies. Both inhalant (seasonal) allergies and food allergies can affect dogs and cats. In the mp3 file from AVMA embedded on this page, you can hear Dr. Karen Kuhl, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist at the Midwest Veterinary Dermatology Center in Buffalo Grove, Ill., discuss allergies, their diagnosis and treatment, in dogs and cats.
